    Governance challenges vary. Questions about availability generally pose lower risks than those concerning dosage or safety.
  4. Build trust cross-functionally
    For AI to scale beyond medical information, it must work with quality, regulatory, and compliance functions—not operate in isolation. A one-time sign off does little; sustained, system-level governance creates the biggest impact.

The AI Governance Questions Most Medical Information Teams Haven’t Asked (Yet)

Before any implementation, it's worth taking stock of where your organization actually stands on data quality, process maturity, and risk appetite. These questions aren't meant to slow things down; they're meant to keep you from building something that looks good in a pilot and falls apart in production.

  • What may AI do in medical information workflows? What must it never do?
  • How will we detect when output quality drifts—not just immediately after launch, but six months out?
  • If investigated tomorrow, what would our audit trail actually show?
  • Who owns AI governance end-to-end, and do they have the authority to act on what they find?
  • How are we validating that the AI's responses align with current medical and regulatory standards beyond internally approved content?
  • What happens when a high-risk query falls into a gray area the model wasn't trained for?
  • Do clinicians or HCPs receiving AI-assisted responses know they are? Should they?
  • How does our governance model account for post-market label changes, new safety signals, or updated clinical guidelines?

The Bottom Line

AI governance in life sciences isn't a checklist. It's the difference between a program that survives scrutiny and one that gets quietly shut down after the first audit.

The organizations getting this right aren't the ones that moved fastest. They're the ones that built internal trust early—with quality, compliance, and regulatory—and expanded from there.
